Top 5 Color Tricks For Lips

Monday, February 21, 2011

1. Orangey red lipsticks will highlight yellowy teeth, while bluey reds make them look whiter.

2. Light shades particularly shimmery or frosted ones will make lips look bigger.

3. Dark shades or very matte colors will make lips look smaller.

4. If you are fairly tanned you should choose a slightly darker shade of lipstick than you would without your tan or you can look washed out.

5. Using sheer lipsticks and lip stains is an ideal way for the nervous to branch out into deep shades like plums, raisins, and reds.

Sizzling Summer Makeup Looks

Wednesday, August 6, 2008

Summer is a time to refresh your makeup and debut a cleaner, softer, lighter look for the season. Here are some of the leading makeup artists to share the inspiration behind their runway creations. See how you can easily recreate these red-hot runway looks at home and make them your own.

Bobbi Brown: Mauve
This summer, makeup artist Bobbi Brown felt it was time to bring back mauve. "Mauve is one of those colors that has been in my head for so many years. It reminds me of the '70s and Ali MacGraw in Love Story," she says. Somewhere between a purple and a brown, mauve has so many varied tones—pale, dusty, vintage, dark—that it looks good on everybody. Here, this retro trend gets a modern makeover. See what the artist used from the Bobbi Brown collection:

Eyes:
Navajo Eye Shadow
Vintage Eye Shadow
Black Mauve Shimmer Ink Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner
Chocolate Mauve Eye Shadow
Black Everything Mascara

Lips:
Heather Mauve Lip Color
Hot Cocoa Lip Liner
Black Pearl Shimmer Lip Gloss

Cheeks:
Mauve Blush

Chantecaille: Protected Paradise
For this season, Chantecaille creative director Olivia Chantecaille introduced two complementary compacts of ocean-inspired hues. As an added incentive to enjoy this fresh palette, 5 percent of proceeds from the sales of this collection will be donated to vital research on marine preservation. Here, makeup artist Polly Osmond created a dramatic eye by blending green, gray and gold shadows and lining the top and bottom lashes with mascara. The following products from the Chantecaille collection were used:

Eyes:
Protected Paradise Marine Green Eyeliner
Protected Paradise Medium Grey Eye Shadow
Protected Paradise Rose Gold Eye Shadow
Mascara Noir

Lips:
Zinnia Lip Chic
Effect Lip Definer

Face:
Protected Paradise Face Palette

Cheeks:
Laughter Cheek Shade

Estee Lauder: Bronze Goddess

For Estee Lauder makeup artist Blair Patterson, nothing says summer like perfectly bronzed skin. To sweeten this look, he turned to the sheer shades of the sea and another summertime favorite: fresh saltwater taffy! The face is a matte bronze, with a pop of color on the cheeks for a natural glow. Bright, candy-colored eye shadow, lots of mascara and a sheer gloss for slightly flushed lips complete the look. From the Estee Lauder collection, he used:

Eyes:
Automatic Eye Pencil Duo in Hyacinth Sky
Pure Color Eye Shadow in Lagoon
Pure Color Eye Shadow in Butter
Lash Primer Plus
Double Wear Zero Smudge Lengthening Mascara in Black

Lips:
Automatic Lip Duo in Rose Coral
Pure Color Ultralight Gloss in Pink Light

Face:
Double Wear Light SPF 10 Foundation
Ideal Light Concealer
Bronze Goddess Soft Matte Bronzer

Top Makeup Trends for Spring 2008

Tuesday, January 1, 2008

Spring 2008 makeup trends include bright candy colors by day, and dark plum and purple for night. Smoky eyeshadow continues to be a popular look this Spring, except you'll find it in a lighter version with gray and metallic silver instead. To complement the season's fashion trends with exotic touches and a '30s inspired look, makeup trends include matted foundation for the face, and sultry reds for the lips. Get started on some spring cleaning in your makeup collection catch some of these top makeup trends for Spring 2008:

Spring 2008 Makeup Trend: Pastel Eyeshadow
Sweeping eyeshadows in pastels are a top trend for Spring 2008, especially with the season's focus on floral prints and multi-colored layers. Pastel eyeshadows in eggshell blue, light green, and lilac are perfect enhancements for brown and blue eyes. Add a touch of deep blue eyeliner for an exotic look.

Spring 2008 Makeup Trend: Extra-Thin Cat Eyes

If you've been experimenting with the cat eye look with a liquid eyeliner this year, Spring 2008 is the season to practice and show off your hard work. Cat eyes are back for spring, except their paired with super-light eyeshadow and 'nude' colors. They will be the focal point of your face, so keep all other makeup to a minimum and pull off the look with an extra-dark pencil or liquid liner.

Spring 2008 Makeup Trend: Super-Dark Lipcolor
From dark red to deep browns and pinks, enjoy the classic '30s trends with dark lipcolor and liner. Balance out this look with black eyeliner and plumped up lashes for maximum appeal. It's the perfect match with pantsuits and all-black ensembles this season.

Spring 2008 Makeup Trend: Fantasy Nails
This spring promises to indulge in fairytale themes, so be prepared to spare no expense with nail decorations and creative styles. While the simple French manicure works great for the day, step it up with bold metallics and glitter for special events. Top colors for the season include pink, orange, yellow, and even navy blue.

Spring 2008 Makeup Trend: Crayola Colored Eyeshadow
If you prefer a bolder look for eyes over a subtle pastel palette, consider a few eye-popping colors straight from the crayon box! Take your pick of bold red, green, blue, and even yellow this season; tone it down with simple black and brown eyeliner, and go easy on the rest of the makeup for a balanced look.

Spring 2008 Makeup Trend: Matted Foundation
The dewy look in makeup is best reserved for the summer ahead, so you'll want to choose matted over glossy for foundation and powders. Matted foundation also gives you a professional finish, and mineral makeup can be 'set' with gels and sprays for a polished look.
From the popular cat eye to bold eyeshadow palettes, Spring 2008 makeup trends offer plenty of room for creativity. Lighten up winter makeup with a few bright colors this season and you'll be able to update your makeup collection with ease!
